A few days ago, in preparation for the upcoming Summer Olympics, I reinstalled Windows XP on my computer. I purchased my Dell a few years ago, and immediately wiped Windows off the hard drive, replacing it with Linux.
However, NBC, in all its wisdom, decided that all its online Olympic coverage would use Microsoft's new Silverlight technology instead of Flash, and since Silverlight isn't available for Linux, and I wanted to view the online coverage, I reinstalled XP.
And decided to see what else is available for Windows, since I'll be using it for the next few weeks. One of the first things I looked for was a good, free disc-burning application. On Linux, there are plenty of servicable applications (K3b and Brasero being the most popular). Obviously, a program like Nero would have the most features, but I just wanted something fast and free, since I won't be using it for more than a month.
So I was really happy to find a program called CDBurnerXP. Not only does CDBurnerXP have a nice interface, but it's easy to use, does what I want (and more!), and is completely free.
First, the interface. As popular as Nero is, and as powerful, I have never been a big fan of its interface… there's just too much going on. Give me a program like Brasero any day of the week. So when I first opened CDBurnerXP and saw its simple interface, with only a few options at the top level… that right there was almost enough to convince me.
Then, I saw what it could do, and what formats CDBurnerXP supports. What? Well, not only can CDBurnerXP burn to standard CDs and DVDs (and rewritable CDs and DVDs), but also to BluRay and HD-DVD discs.
You can use CDBurnerXP to create mp3-CDs, for storage (or playback on a supported DVD player). You can create bootable discs, ISO images and Audio CDs, either from CD audio tracks or from MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC and WMA files. You can burn using disc-at-once mode, which is fantastic for CDs where one track blends seamlessly into the next… no more jarring blank spaces.
You can use CDBurnerXP to convert bin/cue sets to ISO, as well as NRG files created by Nero. You can also take a standard CD or DVD and convert it to an ISO file for saving to your hard drive.
Finally, CDBurnerXP offers simple cover printing, LightScribe integration, and most IDE, USB, SCSI and Firewire drives (a full list is available at the website). You can restrict users from using CDBurnerXP, or give everyone usage privileges. Finally, if you're into that sort of thing, CDBurnerXP has a command line version.
I really only grabbed CDBurnerXP in the event that I needed it, and have already had a chance to use it a few times… once to burn an ISO image, once to back-up a few files I was going to want after I reinstalled Linux, and once to burn a CD full of MP3 files. Each burn worked perfectly, and I never felt I was “lost” in a new program. Features did what I expected, the terminology made sense, the interface led me to where I wanted to go, and CDBurnerXP, unlike some crippled Windows programs I've encountered, didn't want me to pay “extra” just to get the full power of my burner… I could burn at full speed, and did.
All in all, I'm really happy with CDBurnerXP. In fact, for people that only need the ability to burn discs, CDBurnerXP is – in my mind – the perfect choice. Sure, if you want to rip your DVDs to Divx, convert your CDs to MP3 or other stuff, maybe Nero is for you, but for pure burning goodness, I'd go with the simple, easy-to-use, and free CDBurnerXP every time.

Come read this is a good story
After witnessing the updated version on ABC this fall, the news that the original Kolchak: The Night Stalker has finally made it to DVD comes as even happier news than expected.
The progenitor of such TV shows as X-Files and Medium, Kolchak: The Night Stalker starred the incomparable Darren McGavin as an intrepid reporter on a third-rate news wire service who invariably stumbled-often literally-upon stories involving supernatural beings that ranged from vampires to possessed 13th century suits of armor.
One episode even included an updating of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, turning the headless horseman into a headless motorcycle gang member!
The quality of the show could not sustain the levels at which it began as a TV Movie of the Week, but still this show ranks as among the most beloved cult TV shows of all time. McGavin's performance as Kolchak certifies as sheer genius; McGavin totally inhabits this character from his wardrobe to his mannerisms to speech.
In fact, not only does Kolchak wear a rumpled suit, he is a rumpled suit. Nobody else could possibly play this character nearly as well and if proof of that were needed, a cursory view of ABC's modern updating is all that's required. This is not meant as a knock against the new show, which certainly isn't worse and is actually quite superior to many other shows on television right now; it's meant as a compliment to one of the greatest shows in TV history to never get a chance for a second season.
I've managed to catch marathons of Kolchak: The Night Stalker on the Sci-Fi channel recently and even though they've had the hell cut out of them, they are still watchable, though I can't wait to see the DVD versions and find out what terrific non-plot related stuff was cut deleted.
Do they suffer in comparison to the big budgets that sci-fi shows are awarded nowadays? I suppose so, though frankly the old cheesy Doctor Who shows are actually more entertaining than what I've seen of the new episodes, despite the new ones looking like something out of a Star Wars movie as far as special effects.
Besides, special effects aren't what make horror shows. Any viewing of a Val Lewton movie compared to a Wes Craven movie shows you that it's the talent at work that makes something great, not the budget. Sorry, Wes. The original Kolchak: The Night Stalker is still watchable after all these years precisely because it's about the character doing the hunting and not the monster of the week. If you haven't seen this classic chestnut, now's your chance. If you've only seen it in its butchered version on TV then now's the chance to see what we've been missing out on.
These are kind of shows that you wait till after 10:00 to watch and then you turn out all the lights and pop up some popcorn and get under the blankets and snuggle. Little kids may be scared now and then, but most of them are too media-sophisticated to get too terribly upset. There aren't any language problems to worry about and no nudity so why not gather up the whole family and watch together. If things get too intense, the young ones can sneak under the covers for a minute.
The wait was way too long, but definitely worth it, for this lamented series to get the DVD treatment.

Do you own your own business, or freelance? Are you working part-time and, therefore, not eligible for benefits? Health insurance is extremely important as healthcare costs are going through the roof. One of the ways to get health insurance is to join a trade association or some kind of formal group that provides health insurance for it's members. The American Automobile Association (AAA) offers short term medical insurance for between 30 – 185 days which is cheaper than COBRA. This is a good way to keep yourself insured without breaking the bank (crucial at a time when saving every penny counts). They also offer permanent insurance for college students (up to age 63). This is great for students who can't go on their parent's plan as dependents, or are international students, and can be a cheaper alternative to the college health insurance plans. eHealth Insurance offers quotes for comparison for people seeking insurance for themselves and their families. It allows you the flexibility to determine your deductible, compare coinsurance rates and see what your monthly payments will be. Healthinsurance.org offers you the same options as well as links to websites that offer risk pools (insurance for people who cannot get insurance because of their medical/pre-existing conditions, or a change in their circumstances that makes them ineligible for benefits).
Freelancers can join the National Association of the Self-Employed (NASE) and join their Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) that allows you to write off 100% of your medical expenses, including the cost of the health insurance premium. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) are another way to go. You would have to pay a deductible but you get pre-tax savings. BibleHealthcare.com and Samaritan Ministries, offer a medical sharing program that covers bills by having a group of people pool money to help each other pay for medical costs. People make a monthly contribution and can choose from several plans. You will want to check if this option is available in your state. You will also want to compare the benefits you get to the regular insurance rates and see if this is an option that will work for you.
Your chamber of commerce, trade association, or parenting club or organization are always good places to start in your quest for affordable insurance. Stay healthy and prosper.

Hi here's a blog on DVD Storage to check out DVD Storage Furniture
When taking a look at all the kinds of different DVD players, one will quickly realize there is a large selection of brands that you've never heard of before, along with a few cheap ones from main brands like Sony and Panasonic. Prices are within a very wide range, from less than one hundred dollars to over one thousand. With all the different kinds of DVD players out there on the market, it can be difficult to find out which one is right for you. This guide will try to slim down the selection for DVD players that are within anybody's price range.
Important factors one should look out before purchasing a DVD player is the price, the features it comes with, the size, ease of use, and the quality. Surprisingly, there are quite a number of DVD players out there which are affordable but get the job done surprisingly well. However, if you're looking for a DVD player that can play high definition, be realistic and don't expect to find one under one hundred dollars.
The types of features that DVD players can come with are quite daunting. There's single-disc DVD players, multi-disc DVD players, HD-DVD players, VCR-DVD combo players, and more. With the price range that we're dealing with, it's likely only going to be a standard single-disc DVD player.
A good idea to begin with is to look at the websites of various electronic stores such as Amazon and BestBuy. Here you can arrange their selection of DVD players by price and then see what features each one has. Next, when you see the possible products out there that will fit your needs and have the features you really want, start to look online for consumer reviews of the product.
Consumer reviews are one of the best ways to read about electronics such as DVD players, as often enough you can almost immediately see if it's a DVD player worth buying or one that becomes a piece of junk as soon as you plug it in. One that immediately caught my eye is the Philips DVP642. At only $55, it has over 600 reviews on Amazon with a 4-star rating. However, it's a good idea to look at negative reviews of the product and see what people who weren't happy with it had to say. There were some reviews that say that the DVD player died in just a few months and that one should get an extended warranty to make sure it doesn't die on you too. Depending on whether or not you're willing to take that kind of risk on the life of the DVD player, it might be better to just pick up the Sony DVP-NS55P.
Though it doesn't seem to be a very popular selling DVD player (probably because people buy higher-end players or the Philips DVP642), consumer reviews seen at Epinions and Bizrate were praising it. I couldn't find one truly negative review of it. The picture quality is said to be great and it's very lightweight. It keeps appearing on various sites as the best affordable DVD player (and one that you can trust) and it's just a mere $70.
I recently decided to purchase the Sony DVP-NS55P when my PlayStation 2, which I had previously used to watch movies, was starting to get a little too old and would sometimes start skipping. So far the Sony DVP-NS55P DVD player is great and has had no problems at all. It's lighter than I imagined and really skinny too. The remote control it comes with is practical and the picture quality is even better than that seen on my PlayStation 2.
The price range of DVD players varies quite a bit and although many players get many reviews, you should become cautious when you start seeing multiple reviews saying that a DVD player dies after a few months. If you just take some time to do some internet research and look at consumer reviews, you can really find out what you need. But if you're still not positive on which one to get, it might be good to go to electronic stores in person and see for yourself what the DVD players can do.

If you’ve decided to play guitar, the first thing you need to make sure you have is a guitar. May sound obvious, but lots of people decide to play and don’t have one. They try to borrow a friends or learn without one by reading “How To” books. This may work for some, but if you are serious about playing, you need your own guitar.
So, what kind do you get? There are really two considerations. First, what is your budget and second, what kind of music do you want to play? It is possible to go out and get what I call a “pawn shop” guitar for under a $100. A guitar such as this will have a body, six strings and not much more. You can find both acoustics and electrics in this vein; however, and I can’t stress this enough, unless someone gives you one of these guitars, avoid them like the plague. Sure, you will hear stories about people who started on these and later went on to great success or skill, but these people always moved on to another guitar – generally soon after starting on the inferior one. Generally with guitars such as these, you have to fight to play them and you end up in a battle with your instrument. Not a good place to start because the guitar almost always wins.
I would suggest setting a budget for a first guitar at around $300 to $500 dollars at a minimum. It is possible to get a brand new guitar in this range and while this guitar won’t be concert quality, it will definitely be a solid student guitar that will make learning fun.
People sometimes ask me if they should go ahead and start with a top of the line guitar, perhaps spending several thousand dollars on their first instrument. Generally, for students just starting out, my guidance is to wait a while on this type of expense. My opinion is that much of the quality and potential of a high end guitar will be lost on the beginning student. Additionally, should the student give up guitar, the guitar will not be played. This is akin to having a Dodge Viper in the garage that you don’t drive. Start out with a good quality student guitar and once you have a handle on the basics, move on to a better guitar.
So, now the question is acoustic or electric? This question doesn’t have one answer, but there are several ways to answer it. First, you can never go wrong learning the basics on an acoustic guitar. The mechanics and function of the instrument make it an excellent starting point for technique and fundamentals. However, depending on your preference, you may want to soon change to an electric. Can you start out on an electric guitar? Of course you can. However, be prepared for some additional expenses in order to be able to completely appreciate your investment. In addition to an electric guitar in a price range similar to the one mentioned above, you will need an amplifier to appreciate and really hear what you are playing. With an acoustic, the body of the guitar creates and to an extent, amplifies the sound. Most electrics are solid body guitars and there is no appreciable volume to what is played when the instrument is not amplified. Much of the technique you will learn on an electric needs the amplifier to be appreciated. Even with semi-hollow or hollow body guitars, their acoustic capability is quite less than that of an acoustic, so for an electric, you need an amplifier. As to the price of an amplifier, they are similar in price to guitars in that you can spend a little or a lot; however, you can purchase a quality student amplifier for no more than $200; however, understand that if performance is something you aim to do, you will end up spending more on a more versatile amp later.
Much of the dilemma between acoustic and electric guitars can be solved by the style of music you want to play. For instance, if you are a singer/songwriter who prefers mellow music in the vein of James Taylor, Bright Eyes, Indigo Girls or, if it is you goal to play solo performances in the folk rock, coffeehouse style, an acoustic guitar will likely be your best bet. It is possible to buy acoustic guitars that can be connected to an amplifier allowing you to amplify your acoustic signal. This allows you to plug directly into an amp or PA system and project your acoustic sound. You can also play the guitar without plugging it in and have only the acoustic sound.
If your preference is more aggressive, more amplified music such as the All-American Rejects, Green Day, or classic rock such as Hendrix or Led Zeppelin, the an electric is where you will want to end up. As I said before, you will need the guitar and an amplifier. In addition to these pieces of equipment, the more you develop with your guitar playing ability you will find there are other accessories that will help refine you sound.
However, don’t think that a choice must be made between acoustics or electric guitars. Many bands commonly have both acoustics and electrics being played at the same time. Bands such as Hootie and the Blowfish, Carbon Leaf, Fountains of Wayne, even classic bands such as Led Zeppelin and the Eagles all regularly use both the acoustic and electric guitar. The bottom line is that it is not only possible, but completely normal to have both guitars.
In fact, after you play a while, expect to see your guitar collection grow to include both acoustics as well as electrics.
Let me know if there are other guitar topics you would like to learn more about.

I'm a dog lover and an owner of several dogs. My pound basically eats store-bought dog food just because I don't have the time to cook for them every day. But I do cook them special homemade dog food recipes from time to time, especially when one of them isn't feeling well, and he or she turns its nose up at the regular chow. Have you checked out the ingredients in a bag or can of dog food lately? It's common for them to contain animal by-products, artificial colorings, and chemical preservatives, just to name a few things your canine doesn't need. Homemade dog food is much healthier for your pet than most store bought food. There's no argument about that. Homemade food is made with fresh food ingredients that your dog needs in order to maintain his or her best health. Not to mention the money you'll save with making your own homemade dog food. The best brands of dog foods are expensive to buy!
The first recipe I'm going to share with you is one that all of my dogs love. It originated because my Beagle had an upset stomach and wouldn't eat. Normally, dogs aren't picky eaters like cats can be. But if your dog isn't feel up to par, they can easily turn down their normal food.
This recipe is inexpensive and easy to make for your dog:
Turkey and Vegetable Mix
I use two pounds of ground turkey and a bag of chopped, mixed vegetables. I chose turkey because it's easier to digest than beef. (Using fresh veggies is actually a better idea because they have more minerals and vitamins in them.) This made a day's meals for my little Beagle. How much you'll need to make will depend on the size of your dog. You can always make up a big pot of this recipe, then refrigerate the leftovers. You can refrigerate the leftovers for up to a week. Then, for his or her next meal, just take out the desired amount and microwave it until it's just warm.
Place the ground turkey and the vegetables into a large skillet with a little bit of water. Cook on the stove over medium heat. When the ground turkey is cooked clear through, and is no longer pink, the veggies should be tender. You can add some other healthy things to this Turkey and Vegetable Mix, if need be. Such as, if your dog is suffering from Diarrhea, stir in a couple cups of cooked white or brown rice. If fleas are a problem, just sprinkle in a teaspoon of garlic powder. Or, if you want to fortify your dog's diet, crumble up some doggy vitamins and mix them in. To help build my Beagle up because he had lost a pound or two, I stirred in a scrambled egg for protein.
You can make this recipe with any type of meat or poultry your dog likes. You can use beef, pork, ham, lamb, and chicken also. And, instead of the white or brown rice, you can add in some cooked rolled oats for fiber.
Finally, serve some of this mix to your dog, and watch him or her scarf it down!
The second healthy, homemade recipe is one that I call “Chopped Liver Delight.” I use the word “delight” because I detest liver, but my dogs love this food. You should be able to find both beef and chicken livers at your local supermarket in the meat department. They're always cheap to buy.
All I do is boil some beef or chicken livers in a pan of water on the stove. I usually boil two to four pounds at a time. I boil them until they are completely cooked and are tender. Then, I drain most of the water off. Stir in a cup or two of steamed, diced vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, green beans, et cetera. Then, stir in some kibble. Serve warm to your dog and refrigerator the leftovers for up to a week.
Mix some of the homemade food into their regular food. Add a little more of the new food and use less of their regular food at each meal until the switchover is complete.

The Whirlpool Duet system has been one of the top selling washer and dryer combos to date. However, not that many people are aware of the amazing new dryer that has come out of the Duet systems. I am talking about the Whirlpool Duet Sport 6.7 Cu. Ft. 9-Cycle Electric Dryer, Model: WED8300SW. This machine still stays true to the amazing quality that has made the Whirlpool Duet's famous, however, the Duet Sport comes with some new and absolutely amazing features. And on top of that, this machine looks stunning with its new design. And did I mention that this machine runs on average around $700.00?
One of the greatest features this machine offers its users is the ability to do so many clothes at once. This is made possible with its 6.7 cubic foot drum. This drum can easily do a large load of wet towels, or even your comforter. You will not have to go to the coin-laundry center anymore, because with this machine you get all of the great features that those dryers offer you, without having to spend so much money to use them. However, besides the size of this machine, it also comes with some really great features. Such as the nine drying cycles. Some of these cycles includes damp dry, cool down, extended tumbling, wrinkle free, wrinkle guard, delicate and heavy duty. There are also five various temperature selections that give you the ultimate control in drying your clothes.
Another great feature is the AccuDry sensor, which actually monitors the moisture inside of your clothes. The machine will actually stop the drying cycle once it senses that your clothes are fully dry, no matter if it is in the middle of the cycle. There is also a feature called the AccelerCare drying system, which actually expedites the drying duration to match that of the washing machine. This is great for streamlining your laundry loads — basically, you can unload your washer into the dryer and then put a new load in your washer, and they will both be done at the same time, saving you exactly that – time.
Some of the other features this machine offers its users is the Quite Dry Plus system. Basically, this system will reduce the normal operational noise to a mouse whisper. This is perfect for keeping peace and tranquility in your home, even when you're doing laundry. Another great feature is the durable porcelain drum, which will withstand years of normal wear-and-tear, all while keeping your clothes looking great.
If you are looking for an amazing dryer, than I absolutely suggest the Whirlpool Duet Sport. For one, it looks breathtaking and secondly it will give you years upon years of drying superiority. If you are wanting to buy a dryer that will last you years and your clothes years too, than this is the machine for you. Be a smart buyer, and check this dryer out.
